The ideas in this fraction lesson are taken from Math Mammoth Fractions 1 book. Only a few examples of each problem type are shown; you should make more problems of each kind for the student.

## Practice

1.  What part of the things is different?  Express as a fraction.

One third of the twelve flowers are dark.  We can see it is four flowers.

2.  Circle to make groups.

 Make 3 groups.

 Make 5 groups.

3.  Draw sticks or balls for the problems.  Make groups.  Find the given fraction of the balls. While you do the problems, think how you can find 1/2 of a number, or 1/3 of a number, or 1/4 or 1/5 or 1/6 of a number, etc.

 a. The word quarter means 1/4.  What is a quarter of 60 minutes (one hour)?  Draw a clock face and shade one fourth of it to illustrate this.  What common expressions about time use the word 'quarter' and what does it mean? d. How much is a quarter of a gallon?
