The ideas in this subtraction lesson are taken from Subtraction 1 ebook. Only a few examples of each problem type are shown; you should make more problems of each kind for the student. Addition/subtraction connection in pictures

Add: How many
colored balls? __ + __ = 10
Subtract:
Cover
the colored balls. 10 − __ = __ |
Add:
__ + __ = 7 Subtract: Cover the colored balls.

1. Make an addition sentence and a subtraction sentence from the same picture.

__ + __ = __ 7 − __ = __ |
__ + __ = __ 6 − __ = __ |
|
__ + __ = __ __ − __ = __ |
__ + __ = __ __ − __ = __ |
2. In each problem, draw some white and some colored balls to fit the
addition sentence. Then cover the COLORED balls and make a
subtraction sentence.

Add: 6 + 3 = __ Subtract: __ − __ = __ |

Add: 9 + 1 = __ Subtract: __ − __ = __ |

3. Cover colored balls/squares/stars, and write a subtraction sentence to fit
the picture.

4. Lastly, draw the balls or squares yourself to fit the subtraction sentence. And, write an addition sentence too.
