The ideas in this subtraction lesson are taken from Subtraction 1 ebook. Only a few examples of each problem type are shown; you should make more problems of each kind for the student.

Addition/subtraction connection in pictures
Free lesson plan from HomeschoolMath.net

This lesson uses a picture with two different kinds of things to illustrate the addition/subtraction connection. The student either adds those things, or covers one kind of things to subtract them.

Add: How many colored balls?
How many white?

__ + __ = 10

Subtract Cover the colored balls.
Write a subtraction sentence.

10 − __ = __

  Add:

__ + __ = 7

Subtract: Cover the colored balls.

7 − __ = __

Example exercises

1.  Make an addition sentence and a subtraction sentence from the same picture.

__ + __ = __

7 − __ = __

__ + __ = __

6 − __ = __

__ + __ = __

__ − __ = __

__ + __ = __

__ − __ = __

2.  In each problem, draw some white and some colored balls to fit the addition sentence.  Then cover the COLORED balls and make a subtraction sentence.

 Add:  7 + 1 = __

Subtract:  __ − __ = __

 Add:  6 + 3 = __

Subtract:  __ − __ = __

Add:  9 + 1 = __

Subtract:  __ − __ = __

Add:  7 + 2 = __

Subtract:  __ − __ = __

3.  Cover colored balls/squares/stars, and write a subtraction sentence to fit the picture.

__ − __ = __

__ − __ = __

__ − __ = __

__ − __ = __

4.  Lastly, draw the balls or squares yourself to fit the subtraction sentence.  And, write an addition sentence too.

9 − 4 = __

__ + __ = __

10 − 5 = __

__ + __ = __

14 − 3 = __

__ + __ = __
