Free lesson plan from Homeschool Math.net

This lesson gives you ideas how to introduce the concept of missing addend during first grade math, or even in kindergarten - while children are studying their basic addition facts with sums less than 10.

1.  Missing items.  How many more do you have to add?  Write the addition sentence.

I have 2 bulbs, but I need 5 total.

__ + __ = __

I have 3 carrots but I need 7.

__ + __ = __

I have 5 blocks but I need 10.

__ + __ = __

I have 4 carrots, but I need 6 total.

__ + __ = __

I have 1 block but I need 3.

__ + __ = __

I have 3 bulbs but I need 4.

__ + __ = __

2.  How much more is needed?  Draw more 'I' marks to the pictures so you have the total as shown by the sum (answer).

I I

__ + __ = 5

I I

__ + __ = 6

I I I I I

__ + __ = 7

I I I I I I I

__ + __ = 10

7 + __ = 8

3 and what number make 6?

I I I I I I I I I

9 + __ = 10

I I I

3 + __ = 4

I

1 + __ = 5

3.  How much is missing?  Draw first as many I marks as shown by the first number in the problem.  How many more do you need to draw?

I I I I I

5 + __ = 9

 7 + __ = 10

3 + __ = 7

4 + __ = 8

4.  How much is missing from 6?  How much is missing from 5?
