The ideas in this multiplication lesson are taken from Multiplication 1 ebook. Only a few examples of each problem type are shown; you should make more problems of each kind for the student.

Order of operations
Free lesson plan from HomeschoolMath.net

Do MULTIPLICATION first, before addition or subtraction.

ADD and SUBTRACT from left to right.

Study the examples.  The operation to be done FIRST is marked.

Add and subtract from left to right:

15 + 3 + 7
18 + 7 =
15 − 3 + 7
12 + 7 =
60 + 30 50
90 50 =

Multiplication first:

3 × 2

+ 2
6 + 2 =

5 + 4 × 2
5 + 8 =

4 × 4 2
16 2 =

3 × 5 2 × 4
15 8 =

6 × 3 2 × 5
___ ___ =

15 − 3 × 3
15 __ =

Multiplication first.  Then add and subtract from left to right:

2 × 5 + 4 5
__ + 4 5
__ 5 =
10 + 2 × 4 7
10 + __ 7
__ 7 =

Example problems

    = 11 + 3 = 14

d.  20 − 7 + 2

b.  18 − 5 + 4

e.  15 − 1 + 3

c.  50 − 40 + 40

f.  23 − 10 + 3

2.  Do the multiplication first.

15 − 2 × 3
=

 =
2 × 5 + 4
=    =
16 − 3 × 5
=    =
11 + 4 × 2
=

 =
7 × 2 − 4
=    =
6 × 3 − 10
=    =

3.  Now watch carefully!  You will need more steps.

a.  3 × 4 − 2 × 3

b.  6 + 7 × 2 − 4

c.  2 × 5 + 4 × 5

P.S. ....

Check out these short video clips from my favorite band - Rockabilly.US. They play oldies, Elvis, country, and top hits of the 50s and 60s. It's a show with large band, costumes, choreography, little skits, "Kid Kritters", 6 dancing/singing girls, junior dancer troupe, etc.

"Be My Baby"
originally by the Ronettes

Impossible Dream (Elvis song)
Most importantly, the band wants to use the uplifting and energetic music to bring some fun, happiness and encouragement into people's lives. They're doing it selflessly to help others, and don't get paid for any of it themselves. And I admire that!
