# Free & inexpensive math CURRICULUM materials and resources

I will try to collect here a list of free or cheap math curriculum resources. They could be either a complete or partial curriculum, or curriculum-related, such as scope and sequence or diagnostic tests related.

## Free downloadable materials

**Mathematics Enhancement Programme (MEP) - School curriculum materials**

Entire workbooks to download (PDFs) for FREE for grades 1-10 for non-commercial purposes. These are good quality, too, and not just machine-made worksheet collections. Some homeschoolers use MEP for a complete curriculum. Includes some interactive materials. Provided by Centre for Innovation in Mathematics Teaching.

Free printable math workbooks that have simple calculation worksheets for grades 1-6.

**Math ABC**

Free interactive online math practice for all kinds of topics, grades 1-6.

**XYZ Online Textbooks**

Complete textbooks for Introductory Mathematics (prealgebra), Introductory Algebra, and Intermediate Algebra that are available for free online reading, evaluation, and even printing. For each section of the book, the website also shows links to corresponding math videos from MathTV.com.

**Free algebra flexbook from CK-12**

A complete algebra textbook (free) by CK-12 Foundation. You can also find lots of algebra videos, texts to read, exercises and more. The website has other subjects also.

**Mathematics Instructional Resources at NC Wise Owl**

Lots to explore here. For example, there are worksheets with variable problems meant for review, some for each week of the school year: Week by week essentials, grades K-2, Grades 3-5, and Grades 6-8.

**Shmoop.com Prealgebra**

Free learning guides (tutorials) for all prealgebra topics with interactive practice problems, step-by-step examples, graphs, and real-world applications. This can be used for an online pre-algebra textbook.

**AlgebraFree.com**

Includes a free algebra 1 textbook called Llevada's Algebra 1, downloadable as PDF files by chapter, containing over 6,000 exercises, plus over 70 videos with lectures and solved exercises.

**Pre-algebra Study Guide worksheets**

Over 100 very nice, compact prealgebra worksheets from the Glencoe Parent and Student Study Guide. The sheets have a short, instructional part that reviews the concept, several problems, and answers upside down in the end of each sheet.

**She Loves Math**

Online math lessons geared for girls, from counting through calculus. By math tutor and "mathaholic" Lisa Johnson.

**Totally Free Math**

Elementary Algebra With Applications - a free math textbook to download or to view online (PDF form).

**Exeter Math Course Materials**

PDF files filled with problems for algebra, integrated high school math, calculus, discrete math, and multivariable calculus.

**First-Lessons in Arithmetic, Jones Bros., 1878.**

A free download of an arithmetic book from the past.

**Understanding algebra**

A complete online algebra text for Algebra I by James W.
Brennan. Also a printable version.

**Calculus Made Easy**

A free download of an old textbook, acclaimed to be a lively introduction to calculus, with clarity and simplicity.

**Adding It Up: Helping Children Learn Mathematics (2001)**

This is a book about mathematics education. *Adding It Up* explores how students in pre-K through 8th grade learn mathematics.
It explains research findings on what children know about numbers by the time they arrive in pre-K and details the processes by which students acquire proficiency with whole numbers, rational numbers, integers, beginning algebra, geometry, measurement, and probability and statistics.

## Free videos, animated math courses, and online math practice sites

**cK-12**

CK-12 is a large, free site for learning and practicing math and science. It contains text-based lessons, FlexBooks® (digital textbooks in PDF, ePub and mobi formats), videos, and quizzes for multitudes of math and science topics from K to grade 12.

**Khan Academy**

Possibly the web's biggest and free site for math videos. What started out as Sal making a few algebra videos for his cousins has grown to over 2,100 videos and 100 self-paced exercises and assessments covering everything from arithmetic to physics, finance, and history.

**LearnZillion**

Free math videos for all topics in K-8. The videos are organized according to the Common Core Standards (CCS), but can be used even if you don't follow the CCS — just follow the lesson titles by topics.

**MathTV.com**

Over 6,000 free, online video lessons for basic math, algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. Videos also available in Spanish. Also includes online textbooks. I've written a review of MathTV lessons when they used to be offered on CDs.

**HippoCampus**

Online interactive lessons (free) covering high school algebra and calculus courses (including AP calculus).

**BrightStorm Math**

Over 2,000 free videos covering all high school math topics from algebra to calculus. Registration required (free).

**MathVids.com**

Free math videos grouped by math topic. Basic math, middle school, high school, and college levels. Also includes links to further resources.

**Algebra Within Reach**

Free algebra videos presented by Dana Mosely, worked-out solutions for selected exercises, and other companion helps for Ron Larson's algebra textbooks.

**Virtual Nerd**

Video tutorials for prealgebra, algebra 1, algebra 2, and intro physics. This will also include practice problems and quizzes sometime during 2010-2011 school year. Includes both a free and paid (premium) versions.

**Math Ops**

Free online pre-algebra and algebra course that includes step-by-step narrated tutorials, videos, and online quizzes.

**HSTutorials.net**

Free animated and narrated math tutorials - pre-algebra, algebra 1, geometry.

**LearnersTV.com**

Free video lectures, audio lectures, notes, and ebooks etc. for college level math. Also has material for various sciences.

**Geometry course from Learning Math**

This online geometry course includes readings, problems, videos, interactive activities, homework problems and solutions. It is meant for K-8 teachers but will work well for middle school students as well.

**Sophia**

A large online library of short video lessons and quizzes. The videos are recorded by several different tutors, who vary in their methods and teaching styles, so you have the chance to learn the same lesson from several perspectives.

**Algebra 2 Video Lessons**

This site includes online video lessons and other support materials to accompany Holt Algebra 2 textbook. Click on the Homework help, choose a chapter, and then view the lessons.

**Mathematics Illuminated**

Mathematics Illuminated is a 13-part, integrated-media resource created for adult learners and high school teachers. **The Futures Channel**

A website featuring short movies that show how algebra or science is used in the real world, plus supplemental activities & lesson plans. On the website you can view the movie clips and activities for free, or purchase a DVD that has them.

**Practice Problems for the California Mathematics Standards Grades 1-8**

**Mathematics Benchmarks, Grades K-12**

These are from Charles A. Dana Center at The University of Texas at Austin. The benchmarks describe the content and skills necessary for students on any given grade (K-6), or by strands (K-6 and 7-12). You can use these to have an idea of what topics to cover on any grade.

**Free lesson plans for various math projects**

**Basic techniques for teaching addition, subtraction, place value, multiplication, and division**

**Sensible Math Education**

This site contains lots of tips for K-12 math education curriculum goals, and notably the author's view on what math should be studied on each grade level.

## Inexpensive math curriculum

**Math Mammoth Blue Series Books**

Covering topics from 1st to 6th grade, these inexpensive ebooks explain the concepts well and provide ample practice. Prices $2 to $7 per ebook. (Downloadable PDFs)

**Standards Based Math & Science**

This site sells low-cost CDs that contain lessons and activities for every national standard benchmark for a particular grade level in math and science.

**Complete School Package**

Two 600-page books (1200 pages total) for $25, covering all middle school math, high school math, AND high school English topics.
